Mattresses are one of the most-Googled disposal problems in Oregon, and for good reason. They're large, awkward, full of materials that don't compress, and most cities — Salem included — won't take them at the curb with regular trash. Transfer stations charge extra for them. The mattress sits in your garage for six months while you try to figure out a plan.
Here's the complete guide to your legal options.
Option 1: Donation, if it's in great shape. A mattress in clean, sanitary, undamaged condition can be donated. Goodwill and most thrift stores in Salem won't take mattresses (liability issue), but the Salem Mission and certain Habitat ReStore locations will accept mattresses in excellent condition. Call ahead. Realistic note: most mattresses people are getting rid of are not in donation condition. If you wouldn't sleep on it in a guest room, it's not donatable.
Option 2: The Marion County Transfer Station, 3250 Deer Park Dr SE, Salem. They accept mattresses but charge a separate per-mattress fee on top of standard tipping costs. You drive it, you lift it onto the truck, you unload it on the other end. The fee is typically $20-30 per mattress depending on size. Box springs are charged separately. Bring proof of Marion County residency.
Option 3: Mattress recycling programs. Oregon doesn't have a statewide mattress recycling mandate (unlike California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), but there are private recyclers in the region. Most charge per-mattress fees similar to transfer station rates. If you care specifically about recycling the steel, foam, and cotton rather than landfilling, this is your route.
Option 4: Curbside bulk pickup with your trash service. Republic Services, the primary residential waste hauler in Salem, offers bulky-item pickup but you have to schedule and pay separately. Mattresses are typically $25-40 per item with this service, and you usually have a 1-2 week wait for pickup. Check your specific service area — pricing and rules vary.
Option 5: Hire a junk removal service. The bed bug question. Mattresses with possible bed bug history are higher-risk to move. We bag them in sealed plastic before transport so nothing gets into your hallway or our truck. Mention it when you text us so we bring the right gear. Most transfer stations and donation centers won't accept mattresses with known bed bug history — call us instead.
What happens to it. Mattresses we pick up get sorted by condition. Donation-eligible mattresses (rare but real) go to donation partners. Past that, mattresses are routed to recycling whenever possible — the steel, foam, cotton, and wood get separated and processed. The percentage that recycling-eligible mattresses run is going up year over year as more processors come online.
